Bapteme Du Feu A Champion Is Crowned

June 7, 2012
Hey the folks this is Billy Concarney back for the season ending update on the 2012"A" season championship game. The HFHL's version of the Thrilla in Manilla, the Battle Of Quebec...the biggest scrap between the missus and me...the whole enchilada...hmmm now I;m hungry, I'll be right back!
Ok, so let's get this party started...hey ho and away we go!

The battles were raged and wars were won and after all of the dust settled, it came down to two. The big boned, high scoring Sabres had fought through some adversity, but here they were at the big dance. The Fire, led by Rob "The Rhino" Tyrrell who was still looking for his first ever championship, had plowed their way through anyone in their path. Run and gun was their style and their goalie...well let me tell you this, he is a goalie!
So Monday night saw the Sabres square off against the Fire. no one needs to know where they finished during the regular season, that didn't matter anymore, what mattered was these were the two teams the circumvented the draft and league policy to pick guys up to make their teams better. Ooops! Did I say that out loud? Gosh darn it, I have to watch my tongue...er my fingers.
Seriously, these guys both deserved to be there and there they were, looking each other in the eyes, music playing softly in the back round, I could hear Lionel Richie singing "Say you, say me...say it for always...that's the way it should be".
The lights dimmed, the anthem was sung and then the call was made.
"let's get ready to rumbllllllllllllllllle!"
The ball was dropped and I don't know who won the face off, but someone did. The game was tight for the first bit but the Fire scored first, but the Sabres answered back with two goals by Scott "I'm Hot" Cross. Fire goalie Chris "MY Head Is Some Big" MacKinnon made some huge saves in the first to keep the score close.
the second saw the Sabres score yet again to take a 3-1 lead and the Fire seemed to be a bit lethargic, for those of you who don't know what that means, watch Martin Kane play nets sometime. It explains it all. But we know that big things can come from just a little spark, and that little spark was none other than Greg "The Shreddies Kid" Schrader, who scored the first of three goals and then assisted on the next two. the buzzer went to end the second and we were all tied up at 3.
The Sabres came out roaring in the third scoring the first two goals. the Fire looked like toast...ha, ha that was a good one. But no, they weren't done yet, they answered back with two of their own. Then the sabres scored twice. This game was in the bag...but not yet boys. The Shreddies Kid was in town and he wasn't letting this opportunity pass him by.
Bang, he scored his second. The score was even and the stage was set. who would be the hero?
Well, there are no heroes in this game, just big burly men with sticks in hand chasing a small white ball with holes in it and stuffed with flannel blankets and underwear and stuff...ok, no underwear, but real live flannel though.
Back in the world war eras, the French coined a term bapteme du feu, which was made in reference to the new soldiers facing bullet fire for the first time. well tonight, that term took on a new meaning as Greg "the Shreddies Kid" tipped a low shot past Jason "Boom Boom" Boudreau to give his team the lead with 18 seconds left.
The Fire win, the Fire win and no one will ever be able to call Rob "the Rhino" Tyrrell an under achiever again!
Congrats boys. You earned it and we tip our hats to you.
Job well done for the Sabres as they deserve top honors for being there.

So, my lads and lasses, that is the story of "The Shreddies Kid", and how he single handedly changed the outcome of this years finals.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, Champion is very close to the word mushroom in French. And they keep mushrooms in the dark all day and feed them poop. Yuk!

Be well and don't forget that we have pick up on Monday nights. Stay tuned to your emails and you will get the announcements from  our beloved Commish.
