First of all, this has been to say the least a
Rather interesting season. One would like to think that
Unless you are new to the league, there would not be any surprises.
In fact, there were many surprises. The first one being the
Titans first round choice of Matt "The Hat" Clarke.
No one expected Jeff "My arms are some big" Shute to take Clarke
In the first round, let alone as his first pick.
No one would have predicted that. When we asked Shute about his choice
Jeff said "I thought it was a great decision at the time".
Although it was a rather risky one, but let's skip the martial arts and get at it!
Chill Prove Their Point
Chill 17 Lynx 5
The Chill, who finished on top of league, beat the Lynx by a whopping 17 to 5 score. Led by team captain Adam "Don't Have A" Cowie who had 8 points and long time league leader Tony "RE" Joyce with 7 points, and yes, one was even an assists (must have hit the guy before it went in), these guys proved to everyone why they are the favorites going into the post season. The Lynx have a rather large hill to climb as they have lost big time to the two best teams in the league. Do they have what it takes to get it done? Time will tell.
Slayers Can Take A Hack
Slayers 9 Hackers 6
This was another strong game for the Slayers...until the third. One again, the Slayers back end proved to be sleeping when it came to the last period. Both "D" and Keeper alike were no where to be seen. If not for the strong play of the forwards, this may well have been a loss. Rookie of the Year front runner Shawn "Mighty Mac" MacKenzie tallied 8 points to lead the Slayers while Hacker captain Dave "Super" Cooper picked up 4 points to lead the Hacks. Rookie goalie Craing "the Gargoyle" Burgoyne played a note worthy game which gave his team a chance. The Hackers have the potential to make a lot of noise going into the post season...especially if they yell really loud.
Fire Scorch Titans
Fire 16 Titans 4
So how's thsi for sending a message to the rest of the league. Don't play the Fire or you just might get burned. Led by Tyrrell with 7 points and Greg "The Shredder" Schrader with 6, the Fire were too much for the Titans. Chris "I have The Nicest Pads In the League" MacKinnon came back to life and played a great game for his team. The Titans on the other hand were more of the same. Missing their first round pick for a second week, they just could not handle the "heat" so to speak. The Fire will face off against the Slayers in the first round. Team captain and GM Rob "The Rhino" Tyrrell has said that he gaurantees a win in the first round. "Yea, we have more "Fire Power" than we get credit for. With Chris on his game and Greg getting into Kane's head already, we should be able to breez through into the next round" You know what Rob, I just might have to agree with you on that one.
Dogs Win Their First!!!! not....
Sabres 6 Bulldogs 5
The Dogs may not have finished the season with a win, but they sure served notice that they could pull off an upset in the play offs if everyone else on the other team does not show up. Ok seriopusly, they played great. It was a close game until late in the third when Scott "The Shot" Cross fired two shots into the net to take the lead. Bulldogs captain and GM Mark "The Spark" Thompson was optimistic after the game. "Well, the way I see it is we have nothing to loose right? I mean, no one think we can do anything, but hear me well and clear...don't count us out just yet. If I can get my full team out, Rob Francis might be able to talk the other guys to sleep and now that we have the Showlin Monk playing for us, anything is possible." he Sabres have a great chance to get past the first round. They are playing well and if jason "Boom Boom" Boudreau can face the right way, he should be a deciding factor. Watch out for these guys.
So that wraps up the regular season. The final standings are:
1) Chill
2) Slayers
3) Lynx
4) Titans
5) Fire
6) Sabres
7) Hackers
8) Bulldogs
The playoff match ups look like this:
Chill vs Bulldogs
Slayers vs Fire
Lynx vs Hackers
Sabres vs Titans
So that's it for thr regular season. The stage is set for yet another exciting round of play offs here at the HFHL. Not suyre what could top the dramatics of last year...except if maybe the Bulldogs could win it all!
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, if you win your first round as an underdog, you're lucky. If you win it all...then your good.
Have a great week and be well.
