Craig Mercer was the offensive hero for the Lynx, as he scored five goals, including the first two tallies of the game. In fact, Mercer had a hand in the first five Lynx goals.
The Lynx led 3-1 after one period, but it wasn't until a 4 goal outburst midway through the second period until the Lynx put the game out of reach. By the time the second period was over, the Lynx had all but sewn up the game, as they had opened up a 8-3 margin.
But it was McCarthy who prevented the Sabres from ever getting into the game. McCarthy stopped 44 of 48 shots, good enough for a 91.7% save percentage, vaulting him into the league lead in that category.
Other than Mercer, Mike Hashem, who scored twice, was the only Lynx player with more than one goal. Normally defensive-minded Sabre Mike Sullivan topped all his teammates with two goals.
Sabres captain Chris McMaster returned to action as a defenseman in his first action of the season, and his first regular season game not as a goalie in two and a half years. After scoring 0 goals and 0 assists in his return, McMaster remarked "it may be another two and a half years before I play out again".
