With less than a minute into the game, Phil Pellerin scored the games opening tally, declaring to the Sabres that the Slayers were not the pushovers that lost 16-1 in last season's semi-final. The Sabres rookie goaltender Adam Pettigrew found his groove after that goal, stopping the next 21 Slayers shots. Pettigrew, who came to the game after playing two hours in nets for his other league's team, finally succumbed to the Slayers final shot of the first period, to give the Slayers a 2-0 first intermission lead.

The extreme heat and humidity began to take its toll in the second period, as a vastly improved Slayers squad peppered Pettigrew for 17 second period shots. Slayers sniper Glenn MacCullough led all second period point scorers with three points as the Slayers beat down the wilting Sabres defense. Injured Sabres defenseman Mike Sullivan and captain Chris McMaster were relegated to spectators, as a the Slayers scored five unanswered second period goals to open up a 7-0 second intermission lead.

The only question remaining to be answered in the third period was the question of the shutout for Slayers goalie Paul Chui. Entering the third, Chui had stopped all 21 shots on goal. But is was not to be, as the Sabres all-time leading scorer Chad Griffin finally got his team "off the schnide", closing the gap to 8-1 early in the third.

But it was the Slayers night, as they cruised to a 9-2 romp over the Sabres. Chui stopped 32 of 34 shots -- good enough for the fourth best save percentage in a regular season game. Slayers forward Rob Tyrrell made a successful return to the league, scoring 3 goals and one assist, as did first-year Slayer Phil Pellerin. Also with four points, was grinder-cum-scorer MacCullough, who had four points in total.
