Slayers Slain by Mac Attack

April 2, 2002
The surging Sunnydale Slayers nearly pulled off another upset Tuesday night, as they eventually succumbed to the ADC Lynx 10-9.

The Lynx started captain Richard Wannamaker in goal, giving first-string goalie Tony McCarthy the opportunity to play forward. McCarthy didn't disappoint, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists in the first two periods, helping the Lynx amass a commanding 8-4 second intermission lead.

The Slayers, who had an opportunity to vault past the Lynx into second place with a win, came out fighting in the third period. Shawn Currie capped a four-consecutive goal span to tie the game at 9 late in the game. But with the Slayers applying most of the late pressure, journeyman Richard MacMillan stepped up for the Lynx. MacMillan beat Slayer goalie Paul Chui with a backhand with less than 3 minutes to play to give the Lynx the final margin of victory. MacMillan, who was heard negotiating for extra points from statistician Chris McMaster in exchange for a drive home, was jubilant after the game. "It's not the quantity of goals," explained MacMillan, "it's the quality."

Chui, the game's first star, was the reason why the Slayers were within striking distance in the third period. Chui faced an amazing 47 shots in the first two periods alone, and ended the game with 60 shots against.

With the win, the Lynx remain in sole possession of 2nd place, while the Slayers temporarily remain in 3rd place, pending the results of Thursday night's games.
