"Big Three" Make Big Waves in Openers

March 14, 2002
The three winningest teams in FHL history scored knockout punches in their 2002A debut games this week. The ADC Lynx, coming off a tough defeat in last year's championship game, were overpowering in a 16-6 trouncing of the Sunnydale Slayers. Led by the forward line of Blaise MacPhee and rookie Phil Pellerin, the Lynx were a threat to score every time they touched the ball. McPhee's 10 goals were the most scored in a game by a single player since the 2000B season. On Thursday, the new-look Sabres met the familiar looking Fire in a rematch of one of last season's quarterfinal games. The Sabres, with only four returning members to their roster, controlled play early, jumping out to a commanding 7-2 second intermission lead. The Sabres noticebly tired in the third, allowing the Fire to close within 2 goals, before pulling away to a 9-6 victory. Peter Rowe led the Sabres with 5 goals while the Sabres all-time leading scorer Chad Griffin added 3 goals and 2 assists. The week's final affair turned out to be the week's biggest mismatch. The defending champion LAN Hackers looked in peak form as they systematically dismantled a rebuilt Chill squad, 18-3. John Price led all goal scorers with five, while Glenn McCullough almost matched his last season's total of 6 points, as he tallied two goals and three assists.
