The Chill opened up their season against a vastly improved Sunnydale Slayers squad last Tuesday night. The Chill dressed top-round draft pick Rob Tyrrell, who signed with the Chill prior to the game. Details of the contract were not immediately available.
Tyrrell and sophomore superstar Jehad Chedrawy proved to be too much for the Slayers to handle, as the Chill erased a 4-2 first intermission deficit and cruised to an 11-6 beating of the Slayers.
Tyrrell and Chedrawy led all scorers with four goals apiece, while Kenzie Royal opened his fourth campaign with the Slayers with a hat-trick. With Slayers captain and goalie Paul Chui holding out for more money, the Slayers started their 2000B goalie Peter Rankin, who nearly recorded his first 80% save percentage game in a losing cause.
The Lynx opened against the defending champion Lite-Sabres in Thursday’s opening affair. The Lynx made significant acquisitions in the off-season in getting super-snipers Steve Chiasson, Craig Mercer and Blaise McPhee. The Sabres squad was decimated during the draft, losing all but captain Chris McMaster and forwards Chad Griffin and Dave MacKenzie. The outcome of this game was never in doubt as the Lynx rolled over the champs 11-8. Chiasson led all Lynx by scoring 6 points against his old team. The Sabres debuted the brother of Chad Griffin, former junior stand-out Chris Griffin, who tallied a hat trick in his inaugural game.
The week’s final game pitted the finally-dethroned LAN Hackers against last year’s doormats, the Keane Fire. The Fire had taken advantage of their favorable drafting position, re-acquiring stars Kevin Haddad, Mike Sasco, Damian Ho, and Al MacDonald, while picking up Rookie of the Year candidate Gian Scalet. The Fire were missing both of their goaltenders on this evening, and made a deal to start Hackers rookie Peter Rowe in nets. Although Rowe made several acrobatic saves in his debut, the Hacker’s John Price was still able to tally 7 goals and 2 assists, to propel the Hackers to a 10-10 tie. The game was shorted due to the goaltender delay at the beginning of the game. Scalet led the Fire with 4 goals while line-mate Ho recorded a hat-trick.
