Playoff Picture Coming into Focus

April 27, 2001
With one week to go in the regular season, the final pieces of the playoff puzzle are falling into place.

As is traditionally the case, the LAN Hackers currently sit in first place. But unlike most seasons, they do not have first place wrapped up yet. The Lite-Sabres and the Hackers share identical records of 7-1-1 with each team winning one game against the other in the regular season. If the two teams finish with identical records, the tie-breaker will be plus/minus differential. Presently, the Hackers are +33 while the Sabres are +26 which means the Hackers will surely win the tiebreaker.

Third place is also up for grabs. Both the ADC Lynx and the Keane Chill have shots at the position which is coveted because it is usually "the team that doesn't have to play the Hackers in the semis". Although the Lynx (5-4) have a one-game edge on the Keane Chill (4-5), the Lynx face a tough challenge against the Hackers in their final game, while the Chill will have a much easier time against the Keane Fire in their finale. If the Chill win, and the Lynx lose, the Chill would earn the 3rd position based on their plus-minus advantage.

The only thing certain about the playoffs so far is that the Sunnydale Slayers have improved one position on last year's cellar-dwelling performance. The Slayers will finish in 5th place based on their 2-7 record.

Bringing up the rear for the first time since the league's inaugural season will be the Keane Fire, who are still winless at 0-7-2. If there's a bright spot to the Fire's season, it's that they are incredibly the only team to gain a point on the Sabres and the Hackers this year, as they tied them both. However, their playoff run may be short lived as it appears they will be without their captain and inspiration leader, Steve Barriault, as he has been named as a potential replacement to both Mike Keenan and Byron Dafoe in the Boston Bruins organization.
