Cold War Showdown - Offensive Superpowers to Meet

December 8, 2000
Throughout the season, many league fans were drooling over the prospect of the LAN Hackers playing a fully-equiped ADC Lynx squad in the finals. Well, they've gotten their wish as the Hackers will face-off against the Lynx for the 2000B championship.

It was billed as the match-up of the year, and for good reason. The ADC Lynx (6-5) were finally bringing all of their high-powered scorers to square off against a well-balanced Lite-Sabres (8-2) team. The Lynx had averaged a remarkable 25 goals per game when sporting a lineup including all-stars Blaise MacPhee, Jay Allison, Chad Barron, and Greg Foran. The Lite-Sabres on the other hand, were averaging less than 8 goals against per game in a season which saw scoring go through the roof.

Something had to give.

Early it seemed as though the Lynx would have the edge as they pulled out to a quick 2-0 lead. A gritty Lite-Sabres squad, who were not used to playing from behind, pulled within one at 4-3 at the end of a tightly fought first period. Foran and Sabres' forward Steve Chiasson exchanged wrap-around goals in a period filled with intensity.

The second period saw more tight-checking and great scoring opportunities. The Lynx would frequently appear to be on the edge of pulling away, only to have the Sabres mount a comeback. However, a late goal by Blaise MacPhee gave the Lynx a 7-5 intermission lead and more importantly, the momentum entering the third.

The relentless Lynx attack took it's toll on the Sabres in the third peiod. After closing to within one at 7-6, the Lynx went on to dominate the rest of the game, winning 12-7 and outshooting the Sabres 16-6 in the third period.

Lynx grinder Scott Ferguson was euphoric after realizing he was going to be playing in his first ever league final. "I've been growing this playoff beard for months now...I knew it would work," revealed Ferguson.

Sabres goaltender Chris McMaster, who had his worst statistical performance in his two season goaltending career, was quick to blame management. "I haven't been impressed with many of our captain's decisions this year, starting with the draft, right up to his decision to bench Kevin (Green) in the final for poor fashion sense," explained McMaster.

Sabres captain Chris McMaster wasted no time in placing the blame elsewhere. "You know what, I'm completely fed up with the website editor's constant portrayal of the Sabres as a bunch of goons and halfwits," said McMaster. "That sort of negativity takes its toll, and that toll was evident in the finals."

As for the editor, I can say this: McMaster's twisted circular logic is not going to win him any fans, and if he wants to have his team treated with respect on this website, he'll have to start treating the editor with a bit more respect.
