Sun Finally Shines on Sunnydale

November 10, 2000
It took them 8 games, but in perhaps their last realistic chance at winning a regular season game, the Slayers finally cut the mustard. Facing the 5th place Keane Chill, the Slayers racked up an 18-11 victory.

The Slayers were led by third all-time leading scorer Kenzie Royal, who had 8 goals and 4 assists. Royal, who like many others in the league this season, is enjoying career-high stats, with new highs in goals, assists and points. Asked if would trade in his gaudy stats for a chance at the championship, Royal quickly responded "No way! It's all about me, me, me!!". In fact, some have heard that Royal is attempting to convince team members to change their team name to the "Kenzie Royals" for next season.

On Tuesday night, the Sabres met the Lynx in what may turn out to be a preview of the semi-finals. The game was a tight defensive battle in the early goings, as the Sabres could only manage to eke out a 2-1 first-intermission lead. Sabres forward Trevor Murphy, back after a two-game hiatus, took it upon himself to break the game open in the second, generating several great scoring opportunities. The Sabres survived a late onslaught from Lynx superstar Greg Foran in the third period to hang on to a 14-8 win. League analysts suggested that missing Lynx Blaise MacPhee and Jay Allison may have made a difference in their absence.

With the victory, the Sabres have assured themselves of a second place finish, thus securing a first-round bye in the playoffs.

The undeafeated LAN Hackers faced-off against the 3-4 Keane Fire in the early game Wednesday. The Hackers faced a slightly stiffer test then they were used to, winning 24-15 over a game Fire team. The Hackers "Parade-Line" of Mike Sasco, Shawn Currie, Steve Schumph and John Price were again unstoppable, led by Currie's 10 goals. The Fire tried a different strategy by putting back-up Mike Montgomery in goal, and moving defenseman Spiro Bokolas up to forward. The Bokolas-Kevin Haddad forward line was especially successful for the Fire, tallying 12 of the team's 15 goals.
