Any of yous youts dat are pre 80's wont know where or what dat comes from! And I guess you dont really need to know, but what you do need to know is that my name is Billy Concarney and i am the official HFHL reporter.
So let's just say welcome to the 2017A season and it could be one full of surprises. Like I won't be surprised if Marty "the party" Kane takes liberties with Stephen Thorne "in his side"!
But enough of these long term predictions...lets take a loom at how things went down in week one.
First up: Bulldogs vs Hackers
So the Hackers always have a decent team. Team captain/GM Dave "Super" Cooper has a knack of putting together a rag tag team of players and whipping them into a well oiled machine...even if there are a few leaks.
The new look Bulldogs also were pretty confident that they had a great squad and well they should be. Adam "the mountain man" Secord made some crucial picks himself.
So the ball drops and off to the races. The Hackers strike first led by Cooper on a feed from Gerard "Woody" Gouthro followed by a quick give away from Thorne which resulted in Jarret Erb's first goal of the season. Then Adam Secord tipped one home after Thorne stood and watched him...and followed up by saying...oops.
But Cooper grabbed his second and this one was all tied after one.
Second period saw the Hackers take control as they capitalized on a few lapses by the Dogs D. The Hackers grabbed 5 more in the second while the Bulldogs grabbed 1 more. The Hackers take a commanding lead after two by a score of 7-3
the third was pretty uneventful. Both teams were more defensive minded and the Hackers grabbed two more while the Dogs added one off a TSN worthy move by Johann "The Finish Flash" Tienhaara who deked and shuffled his way past Thorne and picked the top corner or thereabouts on Kane. Made him look bad...but not as bad as Thorne looked when he shot on his own goalie! Oh my...
When this one was all said and done, Kane was heard calling his agent to see if he could get a one way ticked out of Thornesville...but no such luck. We are only kidding, Kane and Thorne were heard singing a version of I Got You Babe after the game...you know the Sonny and Cher theme...an yes Thorne was...
The notables in this game were Dave "Super" Cooper who grabbed 4 goals and two helpers followed by Shane "Garlic and" Erb who grabbed his first hatty of the season and one helper. Gerard "Woody" Gouthro picked up three helpers and added an assist.
For the Bulldogs, Stephen Thorne was their most outstanding player...I have to stop now.
Actually props to Paul "I wish I was" Highmore who faced 52 shots and although the Hackers scored 9, he made some great saves and kept it close as long as he could.
Hackers win this contes 9-4
Our second game of the night was Fire vs the Chill
The Chill were led into battle by their new captain/GM Colin "The noise the teacher makes on Charlie Brown" Waugh who amassed arguably the fastest team this season. Meanwhile the Fire led by Rob "The Rhino" Tyrrell have chosen the rookie route. Lets see who came out on top.
the Chill drew first blood scoring quickly but the Fire answered back with the next 5 goals over two periods and after 2, it was 5 - 1 Fire.
The third saw the Chill wake up a bit, but not enough as the Fire added two more to the Chills three and this one ends up 7-4 Fire.
Worth while to note is league newbie Matt "Built For Speed" Reed, who grabbed 4 assists followed by whiley veteran D man Sean "The Don" Fitzgerald, who grabbed a rare hatty. On the Chill side, Evan "Pretty Boy" Canning picked up his hatty to start the season.
Goalie? well they were there...but neither one turned in a stellar performance. But that happens right? After the game they both could be heard asking each other who taught the pylons to actually hold sticks...might be a lot of breakaways next week! ;-)
Our third game on tap was between the Sabres and the Slayers. Both of these teams sporting new captains and both teams happy with their rosters...for now...
This one was the closest game of the night. Surprisingly so...and if were not for the heroics of Tom Wynn, who earned this weeks Eastside Mario's Player of the Week award with his performance, the Sabres would have gone down like a paper airplane in the rain!
Wynn face 51 shots and turned aside 46 and many of which were big time "I am amazing" saves!
The Sabres didn't dominate like they wanted but were led by the usual suspects...Gord "The Sword" Caines and Trevor "The Law Man" McGuigan. Worth while to note that long time absent and now sporting the coveted man bun, Tony Joyce scored his first of the season which also turned out to be his shedding of that 5+1 5+1 5+1 number we all cringe at and tallying his 667th of his illustrious career.
The Slayers were led by the line of JD and Alex Gale or we like to call them the "Run and Gun Brothers". They combined for a total of 8 points on the night.
So no period reviews...just the bottom line and that was the Sabres won ugly and with much jovial vocality by a score of 7-5.
Last up were the Mighty Titans vs the Lynx.
So it's late...and i am old, so I cannot think like I could 35 minutes ago...which means you are getting the readers digest version...and for this of you who didn't get the very first line of the whole story? Google it!
The Titans are a power house. They grabbed 11 goals on 42 shots. But the Lynx were respectable as well as they scored 7 goals as well. I think that might have been as many as they scored in their first 3 games last season...ouch...that was a lie and it hurt!
The Titans were led by Scotty "Rocket Sauce" Cross who had 2 goals and 2 assists. Also, Gill "The Mombo" Momborquette grabbed a hat trick and two helpers. Shaun Goodwin added a goal and two helpers as well.
The Lynx were led by James Griffin Allwood and the kid he wont trade so he could play with his old man...cold son of a gun...
Bryce "Baby face" Keating who grabbed two gaols and a helper as well as goosed a guy...ok it was an old guy who just tripped and so he got called for a penalty, but goosed will look better to all his buddies...
The Titans win by a score of 11-7 and start off with a bang...or was it a thud...well it was something!
So thats how it looked from here. I know this story was not my best work, but then no one promised you anything did they!
This is Billy Concarney saying so long, good night and chicken fried pork!
Be well folks
