My name is Billy Concarney and I am the HFHL staff reporter...well, I am the reporter, cause ain't no one getting paid for this!
So let's take a look at the action from week 2.
First up are the Chill and the Fire.
The Fire were coming off of a romp of the Lynx last week while the Chill lost their first game of the season by a big score.
Early predictions gave this one to the Fire, but the Chill had some other ideas.
The first period saw the goalies shine as the Fire had 21 shots and the Chill had 19 shots but neither team had anything more than a goal to show for it. 1-1 after 1
The second saw the Fire grab an early lead as they scored the first two, but the Chill served notice as they added two tallies to even this up at 3 after the second. Again the keepers made some key saves to keep it close.
The third saw the Fire come hard at the Fire, amassing 20 shots but they could only beat Kane once, who made a big glove save off of Alex "the Codroy Kid" Gale late in the period. Not to mention at the other end, Chris "The Big C" MacKinnon, who made some sweet saves in close throughout the third as well.
This was a goalies game for sure as both of these guys showed why they are still considered amongst the top 8 goalies in the league! Notables on the score sheet were Keven "Son of Rob" Pittman who had a goal and 2 helpers followed by Rob "Father of Keven" Pittman, who had 2 of his own goals. On the Fire side, Kevin "The Stank" Shute grabbed a goal and an assist. Way to go Kevin! kevin shute has scored 3 goals on martin kane this year! He owns him!
Our second game of the night comes from the Titans and the Lynx.
The Lynx are looking for their first win in 17 tries, while the Titans are coming of a 9-4 shellacking of the Chill in their home opener.
The Lynx had missed one of their top guns in the first game of the season in Ken Heidman. Well he showed up tonight and baby we mean showed up!. Ken scored the first two goals of the game on route to a hat trick. Unfortunately the Titans answered with three of their own goals to take a 3-2 lead into the second.
Headman once again opened the scoring in the second evening things up but the Titans stayed with the kitty kats and this one saw the Titans leading 5-4 after 2.
The third was a trade of goals but Lynx captain James Griffin-Allwood the 3rd, Esquire fought through adversity to score tow goals, followed by a clean up from Matt Clarke. Could this be it? Could this be the first win in 17 games for the Lynx?
Nope said Ryan Milligan, who ripped a slapper past Wynn off of a pass from new guy Gordon Caines.
This one finished all even at 8-8...Notables were James "That Guy" Griffin Allowed who had a hat trick and a helper, Ken Heidman, who recorded hist first hat trick of the season in his first game and rookie big man Gordon Caines, who tailed 2 and added 2 helpers as well. This was a great game all around
Next up...Bulldogs and Slayers.
The Slayers mounted a come back in their first game of the year tying the Hackers 9-9. The Dogs, took a chunk out of the sabres with a 4-2 game to begin their season.
Well this was another high scoring affair for the Slayers...unfortunately for them it was for the Bulldogs as well.
Matt Seto opened up the scoring for the Dogs in the first followed by a goal from Slayer veteran Dogra, but the Dogs were vicious in their attack and after the first, they had a 3-1 lead.
The second saw a continued dominance by the Dogs as they grabbed three more to the Slayers one, and after the second, the Dogs were in full control by a score of 6-2.
But wait! Slayers captain Johann "the Tierra" Tienhaara had some strong words of revival for his fellow team mates and this seemed to send them into a frenzy! Enter one, J.D "Big Head"... JD scores the first of the 3rd...then the second. Dogs grab one...but JD scores two more! Could this be another come back?
Dogs captain Adam Secord checked in with some insurance...but then Dave Martell grabbed a goal to bring his boys within one.
Dying seconds, JD has the ball in his own end...winds up...and Whack-O! rips a shot at the net that catches new guy Paul "Biggest chest protector in the history of the league" Highmore off guard and ties it up! What a finish.
JD Big Head take two hat tricks to the bank in this one. Dogs bright spot was Mark Duggan who had a great game with 2 goals and 3 helpers.
This one ends up in an 8-8 tie. Worth while to note that the Slayers have amassed a total of 17 goals in the their first two games...unfortunately their DEFENCE is a bit suspect and so they are also carrying 17 goals against in their first 2 games. Come on boys...look after your keeper!
Last game of the night was between the ferocious Hackers and the sharpened Sabres...
The Sabres were leading after the first by a score of 2-1. But just like last season, the second saw the Hackers dominate as they scored the first 4 goals of the second period taking and after 2, the Hackers lead by a score of 5-2.
the third saw that score doubled on both sides and the Hackers scored the last 4 gaols of the game. Led by captain Dave Super Cooper who had 2 assists and 3 helpers and Gill Mombo Momborquette who grabbed 2 goals and 2 helpers topped off by Doug The Pug Forrest's 2 goals and a helper. These guys are really tearing it up. 19 goals in two games...
On the Sabres side, koodo's to Jenna Briggs, who actually played Dave Cooper better then we have seen anyone to date. Also worth while to note Trevor the law man's 2 gaols and his blood brother Cory's goal and 2 helpers.
Bottom line is that the Hackers are strong and aggressive, deep on the front end and super deep on the back end. Could be the most balanced team in the league this year...but time will tell.
So that's how it looked from here folks.
Congrats to this week's Eastside Marioe's Player of the Game, JD (Jonathan Darnbrough) who had a double hatty! Way to go JD...but just one thing... PASS THE BALL YOU HOG! :-)
Don't forget to get out to Eastside Mario's folks and support their business. They have supported our league for the last 5 or more seasons and we owe it to them. And hey! What's not to like about great Italian food!
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, hockey is a two way game...your way...and then my way! lol
Be well folks!
