Let's Get This Party Started! Week One Recap

January 19, 2016
Ok, so you know this time of year is a special time of year. One that sees grown men play kids games...along with women playing kids games with grown men who play kids games...and then there is the kid...you'll figure it out.
My name is Billy Concarney and I am the resident reporter for the HFHL News and I am here once again to give you the low down on this season's games. So with further delay, here we go folks!

The draft took place last Thursday and when it was all said and done, there were several theories as to who made out the best...well I was there and no one was making out, but we did have an interesting draft night. who had the best team on paper? Who cares because we all know that doesn't really mean a lot. All we knew was that we had a female player, a kid, a father and son duo and a mixed bunch of lazy good for nothin's that make up this league...and we love it that way!

Now let's look at what happened Monday...

Where's Boom Boom? Chill vs Bulldogs

So here we are, the first game of the season. You'd think that everyone would be fighting to come out and play. Well the only thing that Jason "Boom Boom" Boudreau was fighting was the flu...so the Bulldogs had to call upon the skills of the old man himself, Marty "the Party" Kane to fill in between the pipes.
The Chill have a pretty good team on paper and the Dogs would have their hands full.
Right off the ball drop, Chill power forward Jonathan Farnborough, hence forth known as JD, came out on fire. He scored a "hatty" and added a helper in the first. This seemed to catch the Dogs of guard but Evan " I can't think of anything yet" White intercepted a pass and poked one by new guy Dan "The Boss" Nauss to keep the Dogs within three.
The second started and in a period dominated by the Dogs, Eric "The Ice man" Eisner stepped up and notched his first goal of the season as the Dogs out hustled the Chill in the second. Nauss, despite making a number of great saves, just did not get the help he needed in the second and it resulted in the Dogs leading by a score of 7-5 after two.
But this was not over...not yet. The Chill scored three in the third, led by Tom "the bomb" Griffith, scored two quick ones on Kane. But the Dogs would not let this bone get away as they matched the Chill for three of their won.
Notables were JD, who recorded a "hatty" and added two helpers. Not to be out done, his longtime friend Eric "The Iceman" Eisener scored his own hat trick and added 3 helper. Also White and McGuigan added hat tricks as well.
When this dance was over, the Dogs took it by a score of 10-8

Something's Burning - Fire vs Sabres

the Sabres had a great draft night. Rumour had it that after the draft was done, at least one team was chasing a couple of their players...but Sabres GM/Captain said "I Like My Team" and shut it all down. Remember that folks...
The Fire, led by league all time scoring great Rob "The Rhyno" Tyrrell, were also confident after the draft, so it would remain to be seen who made the best choices.
So first lets note that there were no penalties. We like that here in the HFHL. Outside of that, not a lot of drama. By the looks of the score sheet, Chris "The Big C" MacKinnon was on his heels and stood on his head. But the Sabres couldn't quite cut it...get it Sabres, cut it...oh yea baby!
The Fire were led by Jon "the Garbageman" McLeod who had two goals and a helper as did Rob T.
The Fire take this one 6-1. Tough debut for this new look Sabres...but keep reading...more new look tae one would think!

Down to the wire! Titans vs Slayers

And that was it in a nut shell. the Titans have a strong shooting team for sure. With team GM/Captain Scott "I'm Hot" Cross and Shaun "Goody Goody Yum Yum" Goodwin, they have arguably the best point shooters in the league. Add speed demon Evan" The TV Star" Canning and you have a recipes for destruction!
the Slayers once again field a bunch of newcomers. three rookies and a freshman, backed up by some old fat guys and a whirling dervish GM. This could prove interesting.
This game started with the Slayer taking it to the Titans and Harvey "The Tinman" Snelgrove who allowed 6 goals in the first. Not a good start. But give us a few minutes and see what happens.
The second stars and this is a different Titans team...a different Tinman. The titans started chipping away. Led by Canning, who scored 4 goals and added 2 assists, the Titans were back in it by the end of the seconds they scored 4 unanswered goals to cut the lead to two.
Ok, so the drama builds as we drop the ball for the third. Boom! Scott cross launches a rocket...one goal game. then bang! Evan The Tv Star scores...all tied up!
But not to be denied, Phyl "le sniper"La Ferriere takes a feed from Matt "Take A" Seto and they take the lead once again. So we get down to the final 30 seconds or so and up steps Kane, making three back to back saves to preserve the win. This was a great game that could have gone either way...but ask Johann T and he will say it went the right way baby!
Slayers squeak out the win 7-6

Last game of the night saw the defending yet new look champions the Hacker face off against the new look Lynx, led by rookie captain James Griffin-Allwood...that was a handful!
The Hackers were sporting one of two father and son duos as Roger "The Ninja" Keating was making his HFHL return and along with him, Bryce "Baby Face" Keating was champion' at the bit to get this game rolling.
Keating...Roger that is, wasted no time saying "I'm back" as he scored his teams first goal of the season off a feed from Paul "Bearer" Chang. Then new guy Govind "We will figure it out later" Rao scored his first goal in his first game. The Hackers have the first two but Ken Heidman ripped on past Tom "I'm getting the" Wynn...and yes it is a premonition.
The second starts and Hackers score the first three, one of which is a blast from Bryce "Baby Face" Keating, who becomes the youngest player ever to score a goal in the HFHL.  But the Lynx weren't going anywhere and they closed the period out with two of their own.
Score after two is Hackers 5 Lynx 3.
The third would see a total of 6 gaols scored, unfortunately for the Lynx it was three for each team, so when it was all over, the Hackers had outscored the Lynx by a score of 8-6.
Notables in this one were Roger "The Ninja" Keating, who had 4 gaols and two helpers along with Dace "I'm Super" Cooper who picked up 2 goals and 3 assists.
For the Lynx, Stephen "the quiet guy" Thorne scored his first two goals of the season.
Not much more to add here folks.

So here is an HFHL Extra...hot off the presses.
The HFHL has just approved an early season, and this was right after the game last night, trade between the Titans and the Sabres. The Sabres will send Peter Hiltz and Bruce Hudson to the Sabres for Shanti Dogra and Evan Canning. Quite a surprise seeing as Canning had 6 pts his first game. But Hiltz is a long time friend of Cross. They have some great chemistry.
Check back next week to see how that deal unfolds.

So that is all she wrote folks. This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, it takes all kinds of people to make up a team...but Bryce Keating scored his first ever goal...way to go dude!
