I am Billy Concarney and this is your HFHL week 10 recap.
First lets take a look at where things stood heading into the final night.
The Hackers had clinched 1st but everything in the middle was anybody's guess. But this night would determine the final match ups for the first round.
The first game of the night we will look at is the Hackers and the Bulldogs.
The Hackers had nothing to lose going in and really so did the Bulldogs. They were going to finish 7th or 8th depending on what went down with the Fire game. The big news for the Bulldogs was the loss of their keeper who went down due to injury on the weekend. So the call went out and up stepped Harvey "Steve Garvey" Snelgrove. The Hackers notched 9 goals on 41 shots led by Tom "The Fiery Bird thingy" Griffiths who tagged Snelgrove for 4 and he added an assist. The Bulldog's only bright spot was new guy Phyl "The Hired Gun" Ferrier who notched his own Hatty.
Hackers take this one 9-5
The Bulldogs will have to dress a player from their team to fill the vacant goaltending spot. Maybe in hindsight trading Kevin Shute and Robert Bernard might have been a bad idea as both of those guys have goaltending experience. We will see what goes down in the first round.
The next game on the pile is the Slayers and the Sabres. Both teams had a chance to make a move on the final night, but seems no one really wanted too...except for the Hatty boys...
The goaltenders on both sides made some sweet saves while the Sabres were led by Trevor "The Law Man" Mcguigan who tallied 3 goals and 3 helpers which also earns him the Eastside Mario's Player Of The Week honours...Way to go Trevor!
There were also a couple of "Hatties" on the Slayers side as Evan White and James "The Guy With the really long last name" Griffith Alwood each tallied "Hatties" of their own...oh...and Your Hand had two assists!
The Slayers and the Sabres battled to a 7-7 tie, which made sure that neither one would move up the ranks.
Next in line on the Hatty Train were Scott "I'm Hot" Cross and Chris "The Guy Who Called that really bad time out for Michigan in the NCAA finals" Webber...both from the mighty Titans, who are squaring off against the last place Fire.
Well the Fire lived up to their name and potential for most of this game. They came out strong and led by a score of 8-4 half way through the game...but the Titans are mighty right...and led by Cross and Webber, they scored the last 7 goals of the game, 5 of which were in the final period to pull of a much needed win. Would that be enough to move them into second place? Have to see what happens in the Lynx and Chill game.
Titans take this one 11-8
Alrighty then...last game coming at you...and guess what? MOOOORRRRE HATTIES!!!
The Lynx and the Chill were facing off in what could be the deciding factor for a few teams as to where they would finish the season. The Lynx, who have easily been the leagues hottest team in the second half, were led by team captain Jonathan "Bam Bam" Farnborough...affectionatly known as JD. And guess what he had? A big fat Hatty! He also picked up two helpers. The Chill had their team ace slash captain Keven "Son of Rob" Pittman and he added his own Hatty to the score sheet. What a return!...but wasn't nothin' stopping the Lynx who were on the prowl and set to claim second place. They won another close battle with the Chill and took this one 7-5.
So thats the recap for week 10. Everything was settled and so now we will look at placement!
finishing first were the Hackers. they will face off against the Fire who really underachieved this season, but don't count them out. They put a scare into the Titans this week and as we all know, anything can happen in the playoffs.
the Second seed will be the Lynx. They finished the season strong winning their last 5 games and really dominating the opposition in the plus minus department over that span. They will face off against the Bulldogs, who will have a bigger uphill climb now that they need to dress a guy off the floor. Tough break, but they have some great character players who would love nothing more than to knock someone out in the first round.
The third seed is the Titans. That may or may not be a curse as they will have to face off against the Sabres. The Sabres look pretty good on paper as well. the edge goes to the Titans in this one as a result of their late season acquisition of Chris "The Big C" McKinnon, who would make anyone's chances better. This will be a great game.
The last match up will see the Slayers facing the Chill.
This is another tough call, but once again it will come down to goalies. Wynn has been playing great this season, but "The gargoyle" Burgoyne is no slouch and he can and will give any team a chance to win. This is a toss up as well.
So that is how it looks from here. A couple of things to take note of...
Dave "I'm Supper" Cooper wins the regular season scoring title notching 29 goals and 13 helpers for a total of 42 points. he was followed by Scott Cross and trevor McGuigan who each had 34 pts.
the Top goalie honours for the regular season went to Marty "I'm 50 and Old" Kane, who had a .887 save percentage and a 4.67 goals against. Way to go guys!
We had a couple of guys hit milestones this season. Scott Cross and Gill Momborquette each passed the 300 career goals markers. Nice job guys!
Also John "Tonelli" Kedy picked up three game winning goals this season. A great season for John! Good job.
So it ain't over yet...the "real" season begins this coming Monday. Stay tuned for updates as the captains will be selecting their respective venues and one that happens, the schedule will be up on the website.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and keep and eye out for updates.
And as usual...remember even duct tape can't fix stupid...but it can muffle the sound!
be well folks!
