The Fat Lady Sings - week 10 recap

January 17, 2023
Well hey ho peeps!
This is Billy Concarney here with a quick recap of what all went down at the Big PRCC Arena last night. Some things up for grabs?Oh yea baby…scoring title, first place, last place… so let’s find out how things looked after the dust settled.

Chill vs Slayers
First game of the night saw the Chill, who were trying to stay out of that last spot, face off against the Slayers, who came into tonight’s game looking to clinch first.
Slayers came out fast and furious grabbing the first and second goals, MattMonk from Jordan Castilloux followed by big guns Sheamus MacDonald on a solo blast. Wes cook answered for the Chill on a pass from Cam Power but Matt and Jordan combined again to get that two goal lead back. The Chill kept pressing and Power scored this time taking the pass from Cook and it was 3-2 Slayers after the first.
Second period saw the Chill even it up when Cook scored his second off a pass from Warren “I’m scoring” Churchill. Slayers captain gave his team the lead when he buried a pass from Jeff Withers. This seemed to crank the Chill up as they unleashed a barrage of three unanswered goals. Rylan Smith from Shannon Thoms, Aaron “Shaggy” Brown from Wes Cook and then Rylan from Brown. Sheamus “Big Guns” MacDonald ripped another slipper from the point to stay close, but the dynamic duo of Cam Power and Rylan Smith teamed up with memories of old as the Chill closed out the scoring for the period and this one was 7-5 Chill headed into the 3rd.
The Slayers started things off in the third when Sheamus MacDonald grabbed his three goal hatty off a pass from Chris “Marner” Inness and we had ourselves a game. Enter Warren “I’m Scoring” Churchill who gave his team the two goal lead back on a feed from Chill captain Rylan Smith. Inness then set up a streaking Jordan Castilloux who grabbed his second of the night and then Sheamus MacDonald notched his 4th of the night and we were all tied up.
When it comes down to crunch time…that’s when the cream rises to the top…and for this game, on this night…that was Warren “I’m Scoring “ Churchill. Warren battled through the Slayers D and sniped a pass from Shannon Thoms to take a late game lead and then…ding, ding, ding…it was all over and the Chill won their last game of the season against the Slayer power house. Chill take this 9-8

Hackers vs Fire
This was the chance for the Hackers to clinch sole possession of 1st, seeing as the Slayers lost. The Fire wanted to prove that even though they were in 4th, they needed to be in the conversation when talking about top teams heading into the playoffs.
The Murphyless Hackers opened the scoring when Tommy Zivanovic took a pass from Jonathan Hunson and that was the only goal of the first.
The second started out with a Firestorm. The Fire came out hard and were rewarded with 5 quick ones. The Gale brothers grabbed the first two when Eric scored on a pass from Alex, then Alex scored on a pass from Eric stemming from a power play. Mark Duggan added to the mix scoring next from Anil Snook, then Liam Oxner grabbed one from Mark Slaunwhite and then Mark Duggan scored again from Anil Snook. Hacker forward Geoff Briggs took a pass from his bro Nick and stopped the bleeding, but the Fire answered right back when Stephen Combdon scored on a pass fromAlex Gale and this one appeared to be all over…but things aren’t always as they seem…and Jonathan Hunson closed out the period with a goal. But the score was still 6-3 and the Fire were too hot to stop…or were they…
Ball dropped and up stepped Geoff Briggs and broke the Nick as they teamed up for Geoff’s second of the game. Geoff then scored his third of the contest on a power play and off a great pass from Jonathan Hunson. Hackers were within one and with less than a minute to Jonathan Hunson stepped up and buried a pass from Gord Fitzpatrick and the Hackers clawed their way back for a hard fought 6-6 tie. Was a great game.

Lynx vs Sabres

Well, the Lynx could not ask for a netter scenario at the end of the night. They got to decide their own destiny with a win. The Sabres, well they had 4 runners again…not a good look for them, but they were game!
Lynx started the 1st period scoring when Rob Tyrrell fed Jason MacIsaac totals the early lead. The Sabres answered back with Myles “everybody loves” Raymond scoring off a pass from rookie sensation Alex Yeadon. The Lynx added two more before the period was over when Matt Grove ripped a shot off a Mike Collier pass followed by a goal from Jason MacIsaac once again from Rob “the Rhino” Tyrrell. 3-1 For the Lynx after the 1st.
The second was like watching paint dry…BORING… Justin MacKinnon grabbed his first of the night when Stu “I’m kiddin” Whidden snuck a sweet pass over. Liam McLeod grabbed a rare tally on a pass fro Raymond to get within two. Alex Yeadon blew a shot past Kennedy, who was filling in once again for the injured Marty “Kandy” Kane on a pass from Liam McLeod. . The Lynx started to heat up and were rewarded with 3 goals to end the period. Whidden from Shane Erb, Justin MacKinnon from StuWhidden and then Jason MacIsaac from Whidden once again. 7-3 after the second.
Well, the third saw Myles Raymond make it 7-4 easily on a feed from Yeadon. But Justin MacKinnon scored once again this time from Matt “China” Grove.  Yeadon then ripped another shot on a feed from Raymond but things went down hill from there for the Sabres. A tough assignment for 4 players to take on but they mustered a valiant effort nonetheless. The Lynx closed out the night with 4 unanswered goals and I ain’t going through all of dat! The Lynx manage to clinch first over all with a 12-5 win. Honourable mention goes to Justin Mackinnon who is this weeks HFHL player of the week.Justin comes away with a $15 Tim’s card for his efforts.

So now down to the nitty gritty…playoff picture…

Goes like this

7PM Chill vs Hackers
8PM Sabres vs Lynx
9PM Fire vs Slayers

We want to also make mention of our top goalie honours as well as our top scorer.
This was a family affair, with Bob Strum taking top goalie honours and his son Matt “The Elf” Strum sitting atop of the leader board. For their efforts Bob will receive a Knapper Kevlar Goalie Stick and Matt will receive a Kevlar players stick also from Knapper.
We want to thank Knapper for some help with these prizes and will ask that everyone continues to support them as they are a big deal for the HFHL.

Well thanks for a great season folks. It was a success coming out of a long hiatus and we hope to see more coming down the pipes…but it’s not done yet.
Next week will start the playoffs and we all know that is the real season. Will be interesting to say the least.
This is Billy Concarney saying good night and remember…no one is going to get paid any more for winning this gig, so keep your heads and play controlled and fun hockey.
Be well folks!
