27 is the magic number! Week 1 recap

September 22, 2012

Hey there HFHL fans. Welcome to another edition of The HFHL News. I'm Billy Concarney and sorry for taking so long to get things together. Technical difficulties can be challenging sometimes. So with out further delay, let's get started.

The first games of the season will be memorable for many reason. None more exciting than the rarest or rare feat here in the HFHL. The shut out. Craig "The Gargoyle" Burgoyne became only the third goalie in the history of the league to record a shu out. Even more unbelievable, not that Craig getting a shut out is unbelievable (but did anyone see him in the preseason?) he faced the same number of shots. Every shut out that has been had in this league came with a shot total of 27. Hard to believe, but that's the scoop. The Hackers dominated the Bulldogs with a sound 11-0 thrashing. Not the way that Bulldog captain Mark Thompson had invisioned. we will see how long the scoreless streak goes for both the Bulldogs and Craigy boy! Congrats Craig

The 2012 A season champs, the Fire, started off with a big win backed by solid goaltending and once again, captain Rob "the Rhino" Tyrrell showing up in the late stages to give his team the win. The Chill, who had only four players, held in there until the third. Rob scored 3 of 4 goals in the third. The Chill were missing their prize keeper Blair "Rockin' Chair" Hammond, who had to sit this one out due to a collision which took place when he was filling in for an absentee ftrom the 8:30 timeslot. The Fire took this one 6-3.

The mighty Titans, who took old fat guy keeper Marty "The Party" Kane in the first round, showed that on going negotiations with Kanes management team did not affect the team as a whole. Kane, who is reportedly playing in the Newfoundland Elite Whiffle Ball League while waiting for a deal to happen, was easily replaced by Blair "The Rockin' Chair" Hammond, who held the visiting Lynx to just 3 goals. That being said, Blair will be out for a few weeks as he sustained a concussion late in the game. We hope he has a speedy recovery. The Titans beat the Lynx 8-3 in this one.

The Sabres and the Slayers squarred off in a battle of teams that start with the letter "S". The Sabres shocked the Slayers by coming out strong and led by first round pick Tom Griffths, managed to keep the Slayers big guns pretty quiet in this one. Nothing too outstanding to report in this one. The Sabres won by a score of 5-4.

The first week saw a couple of things go on that have made the league executive issue this statement.

"The HFHL has always been a great place to play. we try and bring the spirit of fairness and competition alongside the first priority of having fun. As the league starts it's season, it is only natural that players will come in full of pee and give er' as they say. Sometimes, this over exuberance can result in over zealous play. This is what took place this past week and due to this type of play, a couple of players were seriously hurt. One a concussion and the other a trip to the hospital for some stiches. We want people to play hard and have fun, but we do not want people to play out of control. The league wants to remind everyone that they are responsible for their play, and although the intent may not be there, injuries will always be reviewed and even though a penalty may not have been called, may result in league discapline. So please guys, lets take it easy and make sure we put safety first. The refs have been informed to start calling the games tighter to try and keep everyone from getting out of control. Here's to a new season and let's have some fun"

So there you have it boys and girls and Greg Sullivan. This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, sticks and stones may break your bones, but names can make you cry like a baby!

Be well everyone
