Chill vs Lynx
First game on tonight's schedule saw the Lynx rolling into the Ice Dome to face the Chill. The Lynx were missing Liam MacLeod while the Chill were down team captain Scott Cross and Ryan Milligan.
The ball dropped and quickly the young Matt Strum made his mark off a pass from Rob Tyrrell and it was 1 zip. Both goalies shut the door for the rest of the period and notably Bob Strum turned aside 20 shots in the first.
The Second saw the teams trade off goals as Gerard "Woody" Gouthro buried a slapper top corner glove side off a nice set up from Chris Innis. But then Sam Haliburton, desperate to get his name on the score sheet, took a high stick penalty. It didn't take long for Sebastian Hamel to capitalize on the power play when Strum fed a pass to him and he buried it home.
2-1 after the second.
The third saw the Chill take control as they were able to stifle the Lynx offence. Rob Tyrrell and Matt Strum grabbed two quick goals and the Chill started to walk with this one. Haliburton grabbed hi sir third of the season to try and give his team a little spark, but Bob Strum shut the door once again with a great performance in the net as well as a stellar defensive game from his team. Matt Strum added one more to cap off his Hat Trick and the Chill freeze the Lynx with a 5-2 victory.
Strum turned aside 47 of 49 shots in this game, which gave him bragging rights as this week's HFHL Player of the Week honours. Way to go Bob.
Fire vs Slayers
The Slayers were all set to face the Fire in the second game of the night.
Well, first shot of the game came off the blade of Myles Raymond in the form of a not before seen phenom from this lad...a booming slap shot!!!! Top shelf right beside the peanut butter as they say! But then the Slayers started slaying and scored three. Erb from Alex Gale, Alex Gale from Joe Murphy and the Murphy from Erb. 3-1 after one for the Slayers.
The second saw the Fire get an early power play and they took advantage quickly when Jordan Castilloux fed Chris Sampson to draw within one. Then the Fire evened it up when Andrew O'Keefe scored his first of the season. But then Shane Erb showed everyone why he has some of the best hands in the league when he tipped a Wade Mullen slap shot in textbook fashion past Larder. Erb then fed Alex Gale for a goal and Joe Murphy scored from Alex. Sort of took the burn out of the Fire. But Chris Sampson scored off a feed from Raymond and maybe, just maybe they could keep it close heading into the third? Well Erb scored again off a feed from Murphy and any chance of a win just flew right out the proverbial window! Score was 7-4 after two in favour of the Slayers.
The third was nothing but net...for the Slayers that is. They rattled off 6 unanswered goals and when it was all over, the Slayers doused the Fire 13-4
Notables in this one were Shane Erb with a career night scoring 4 goals and adding 3 helpers. Joe Murphy came back strong in his second game with 5 goals and 3 helpers. Alex Gale had two goals but get this...he passed the ball 4 times!!!!
Hackers vs Sabres
The Hackers were visiting the Sabres in our last contest of the night.
First period saw Jonathan Hunson and Alex McLeod connect twice as they each scored and assisted on the first two goals of the game. But Sabres captain Kyle Bradbury scored a funny slap shot goal that had eyes and curved between Kane's legs to keep it close.
2-1 after the first for the Hacks
The second was all Cooper...literally, as he scored a natural Hat Trick and this one was out of reach from there on.
The third saw a bit of a rally as new guy Geoff Briggs tallied twice but the Hackers were all over the Sabres and Jason Boudreau, who was filling in for the absent Craig Burgoyne, just didn't have the energy after playing a big game earlier.
Hackers won this one 11-3 Jonathan Hunson grabbed his second hat trick in as many games.
So there you have it folks. Slayers are no surprise as they have scored 23 goals in two games. Looks like they might be the team to beat from the early results.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and be well folks!!
