And away we go! Week one recap

September 10, 2019
Hey ho neighbors and other people who might be interested in this crazy Monday night whiffle ball league we call the HFHL! First of all we hope you all survived the storm and stayed safe.
Here is your recap for the season openers here at the HFHL, so without any further ado, away we go...

Fire vs Hackers

This was the first game on the slate. The Hackers, coming off their 2019A season Championship run, were full of new faces with rookies, Jody "the rover" Nickerson, Alex " the cannon" McLeod and Jonathan "the hustler" Hunson.
The Fire were were looking pretty good on paper with Sampson and Castilloux and a couple of newbies as well in Andrew "I can't think of anything right now" O'Keefe and Dan "Boomer" Cavanaugh.
So the ball dropped and this season was officially underway. It didn't take long for Cooper to make his mark as he scored on the first shot of the season off of a give away at the point that sent him in all alone. 1 zip for the Hackers.
Last season Cooper was paired with rookie sensation Joe " Ain't So Slow" Murphy and together they tore up the league. This season, Cooper is paired ups with Joe's buddy, Jonathan "The Hustler" Hanson. It didn't take long for these two to serve notice that they could be a very productive pairing. Hunson made his mark early on as well ripping a shot height top shelf to give the Hackers a quick two goal lead. Then the two paired up on Hunson's second of the night and after the first, the Hackers were up 3-0.
The second period saw another news face grab his first goal of the season when Alex "The cannon" McLeod served notice that his nickname was there for a reason with a big blast from the point that gave the Hackers a 4 goal advantage. This was the only goal of the period. Worth noting that Larder, whose game has improved over the off season, faced a whopping 20 shots in the second nad made some HUGE saves.
The third period had the Hcakers striking once again as Cooper grabbed his second if the game off a nice pass from Jody "The Rover" Nickerson and this one looked like it was just getting too far out of reach. But Sean "I'm Taking" Fitz didn't draft a bunch of quitters. After some hard work behind the Hackers net by Jordan "the Digger" Castilloux, the ball came out to a streaking Mark "the spark" McGuigan who beat Kane low on the trapper side to give a little bit of life to his team. Chris "The Handsome "Sampson...(ok, that was just wrong...we will find a better nickname soon) added to the Fire's total as he grabbed his first goal of the season off a pass from Myles "got style" Raymond and there as a bit of a comeback happening here. But the Cooper, Hunson duo struck once more as Hunson grabbed host first career hatty in his first career game off a pass from Cooper.
When this one was all done, the Hackers turned in a great all around performance with a 6-2 victory.

Lynx vs Sabres

The Lynx were looking to build on a great draft night that saw team GM James "my name is just too long" Griffin Alwood assemble a nice line up of players. The Sabres were sporting 4 rookies on their roster and were anxious to see how the team would gel.
Well it didn't take long for one of the Lynx to make his mark when Sam "I Am" Haliburton scored a top corner goal from his partner in crime Kevin "I'm Bad" Haddad. With this, Sammy surpassed his goal totals for last season and made it clear that this season, he would be a real contributor to the Lynx. Then enter Geoff "The Beast" Briggs. He is a newbie this season but he put his name in lights pretty early on snagging two goals I need a row unassisted to give the Sabres a 2-1 lead after the first.
The second saw Haddad grab his first of the season off a pass from Griffin Atwood. This was followed by a natural hat trick by Trevor "the lawman" McGuigan fed once by Gerard "Woody" Gouthro and twice by Chris "Leafs man" Innis and this one was just slipping further away from the Sabres. Lynx up 5-2 after the second.
Sammy H grabbed his second of the game early in the third followed by a late period goal by Wayne "the plane" Hardy...wait what? Come on Billy, get your crap together...
Anyway, this one was over and after that lady sang, it was 6-3 for the Lynx.

Slayers vs Chill

Our last game of the night was a high scoring affair. Too much scoring in this one to do a long winded story with a bunch of nicknames...my head just won't work that well this early in the AM.
But here is what happened, quickly

Tyrell from Strum, first shot of the game, 1 zip for Chill
Alex Gale (one of his 5 goals on the night) from Ryan Sampson (had a careers night with 5 pts)
Strum from Hamel gives Chill 2-1 lead
Tyrrell from Hamel... 3-1 Chill
Sampson from Murphy 3-2 Chill
Sampson from Gale 3-3 after the first

Second period
Strum from Cross Chill up 4-3
Strum from Tyrrell Chill up 5-3
Then a Bunch of Gale goals...like 5... four from Alex, and one exclamation point from Eric that ripped top corner
Murphy grabs his first goal (nice pass ??)
9-5 after the second for the Slayers.

Third period
Comeback starts
STrum from Terrell 9-6
Cross from Terrell 9-7
Hamel from Milligan 9-8!
Murphy...well does what Murphy does, scores one of the sickest goals I have seen in my years in the league. Undresses like 18 guys and then leaves Strum (sorry Bob but it could have been any one of us) flailing like a fish out of water to seal the win for the Slayers.
Slayers win this one 10-8

Congrats to Alex Gale who is this weeks HFHL Player Of The Week with a 5 goal and one helper performance.
Other notables, Rob Terrell still has it...2 goals and three assists. Ryan Sampson, 2 goals and 3 assists.

This first week went off great. Nothing goofy and everyone seemed to have fun. One thing to mention, we need to try and keep the games going in a timely fashion, so once you are done, clear the gym and chat it up out in the observation area.

Thanks for a great opening night folks.

This is Billy Concarney saying so long and be well!
