And We're Off - Round One Recap

December 3, 2018
Hey everybody....guess what time of year it is! It's that time of year when all the music changes and you get to dance like no ones watching to see if you got da moves to get to the Big Dance.
My name is Bill Concarney and the is your HFHL 2018 B season first round wrap up.

Game one saw the Chill visiting the Lynx. The Lynx held regular season dominance over the Chill but this ain't the regular season any more!
Ball dropped and off to the races we go. Kyle Bayers gave the Chill a quick two goal lead off passes by Scotty Cross and Wadey Mullen follows by Trevor McGuigan unassisted. The Lynx fired 19 shots on Kane but it was that last one that blew by him when Sean Fitzgerald ripped a slapper past everyone. 3-1 for the Chill after the first.
The second saw the Lynx come alive as Milligan scored the first goal of the period off a pass from James "That Guy" Allwood-Griffith. But some guy did the Mombo across the floor and Gill Momborquette scored to take back the two goal lead off a pass from NcGuigan. But along came Milligan as he tapped in a sweet goal off a pass from Alex Gale to stay within one. Scott Cross then ripped a slapper past Larder off a pass from Mombo. But league regular season scoring champ Alex Gale finished the period off by scoring two nice goals to go into the third all tied at 5.
The third was a doozy, as both teams traded goals and again Kane stood on his head facing 20 shots in the third.
This one was going into overtime baby!
No one nows what the shots were in overtime but both keepers faced some great quality shots. Larder made a couple of huge big time saves to keep his team i it while at the other end Kane was a steady eddy and after 5 minutes of OT,nothing was settled.
Next up...the shoot out.
First shooter for the Lynx was Alex Gale who snuck a backhander in past Kane to give his team the lead. Bayers went next for the Chill but Larder stood tall and shut hi down. Snook went next for the Lynx but kane closed the door on a five hole shot, while Cross wet next for the Chill and pulled the old go one way and drag the ball across and he tucked it low blocker side on Order to even it up.
Round 4 saw James Griffith- Alwood get shut down by Kane and Later closed the door on MvGuigan t he'd into round 5. Round 5 had Fitz coming in on Kane and he went glove but Kane got enough to keep it out. Meanwhile Mombo couldn't beat Larder. Round 6  Milligan and Mullen, but the goalies said no, no no! Round 7 saw gale and Bayern shut down again as both goalies were rising to the occasion. Round 8 saw Norm snook come in and he made a nice move of Kane to take the lead...and maybe give his team the win? Not if Scott Cross has anything to say about it. He came down and took his patented half slap-snap shot and blew it past Larder top shelf to tie this up.
Round 9...james Griffith -Allwood comes down and goes backhand but just misses the net. Trevor McGuigan has a chance to put this one in the record books and that he did when he scored on a backhand to close this one out and it was the Chill advancing to the next round with the Lynx season still up n the air. Chill win 7-6 in a shoot out

Next game on the card was the heavy favoured first place Slayers and the late season surging Sabres. The Slayers were in tough as they faced off with only 5 guys while the Sabres were missing their legend of a D man Johann Tienhaara who was serving  suspension that was assessed when he and Rob Tyrrell danced like princesses the last game of the season.
This one was a back and forth battle as well.
First period saw the Slayers draw first blood as Matt Reed scored off a pass from Ryan Sampson. But Kyle Bradbury evened it up on a pass from Sam Haliburton. 1-1 after the first.
The second saw the Sabres come out confidently when Shane Erb batted a nic goal out of the air on a saucer pass from Mikey Gelinas. Ryan Sampson evened it up minutes later off a feed from Greg Schrader and we were all tied up again.
2-2 after 2...
So what would the 3rd period bring?
well DeAdder scored a are goal off a nice pass from Bradbury but the Slayers sae bag strong scoring the next tw when Sampson scored off a pass from Matt Strum followed by a lone goal by Greg Schrader.
But Shane Erb answered back for the Sabres and this one ended 4-4 after regulation.
The ball dropped for the OT period and the Slayers fired a quick 4 shots on Burgoyne who was equally to the task. But the hero for this game was Kyle Bradbury who snapped a quick shot past Bob Strum unassisted to send his team on to the next round.
The Sabres win 5-4 in Ot...but the downside is, they have to play the Slayers again in the next round to try and et to the finals. That will be a tall order for that day, but at least they get the chance!

Lats game of the night saw the Hackers squaring off against the Fire.
the Fire were missing their royal captain and veteran Louis Brill while the Hackers had their usual full bench.
The first period started with the Fire scoring first when McGuigan scored from a pass by gerard Woody Gouthro. But Hackers captain dave Cooper showed why he is such a beast scoring the next two goals to take the lead. Gerard Woody Gouthro then score a nice goal off a feed from on Griffiths, but Cooper kept t coming taking the lead back late in the first.
3-2 for the Hackers after one.
The second aw the Hackers start to assert dominance as Chris Sampson scored two in row to start the period , one on the power play. the Fire answered back with two of their own the Brown grabbed a nice goal followed by Eric Gale. This one was staying close, but Sampson grabbed his third of the period and the Hackers took a 6-4 lead into the third.
This one was to destined to go into overtime however, as the Hackers sealed the deal when Sampson and Winsor scored the only two goals of the third. This made sure that they would move on into the semis by taking this one 8-4.

So we now know who is in the semis, but the league is still trying to muddle our way through the seedings. Where this is a new process for us being a 6 team league, we are asking for your patience as we get this figured out.
Teams moving on are:

Hackers
Slayers
Chill
Sabres

So thats what happened tonight in the first round of the playoffs. We had a couple of great games and one dominant win.
Lets see what next Monday brings.
This is Billy Concarney saying so log and have a great week folks!
