Chill Heat Up Late in 15-12 Win Over Slayers

March 7, 2005
Chad Randell broke out of a scoring slump at the most opportune time to lead his Keane Chill to a 15-12 victory over the Sunnydale Slayers on Monday night. With his team trailing 6-2 to start the second period, and in serious jeopardy of losing their unbeaten status, Randell scored two quick goals to change the momentum. He added a third goal in the period, and by the end of the frame the Slayers had turned a 6-2 deficit into an 8-8 tie.

But prior to Randell’s heroics, it was 2004B scoring champion Gian Scalet whose four first period goals led his team to the early lead. Scalet would go on to tally six points and one assist, while netting the game’s first star. Randell’s five goals and one assist was good enough for the game’s second star, while Tony Joyce was named the third star and retained the league’s scoring lead in the process.

There was a scary moment in the third period when Slayer goaltender Mike Burfitt’s stick accidentally clipped Mike Murphy in the head. Play continued, and Tony Joyce scored the game-winning goal a few seconds later, with players oblivious to the gushing cut on Murphy’s forehead. Murphy quickly left the gym to seek medical attention under his own power. At the time this article was written there was no update on his status.

The game marked the second occasion where goaltending brothers Mike and Dave Burfitt squared off against each other. This time it was Dave who prevailed, whereas it was Mike who was the victor in the Slayers 19-13 win over the Chill in 2004B.

With the victory, the Chill move to 3-0 and all alone in first place, pending the ADC Lynx’ game on Thursday night. The Slayers drop to fourth place with the loss, but shouldn’t be too concerned as they won the 2004B championship after finishing fourth in that regular season.

Notes: Scalet scored a natural hat-trick in the first period…Randell’s goal to start the second period ended a streak of four consecutive periods without a point…The Slayers played the game with only two subs.
