Chill, Lynx Fit to be Tied

October 19, 2003
Rookie Mark Leblanc’s fourth goal of the game completed a comeback from an 11-2 deficit, and gave the Lynx a 14-14 tie with the Chill in Thursday night’s early game. The only problem was no one was aware of the correct score at that time, as Scorekeeper Terry Davison was immersed in his mental preparation for his Hackers’ upcoming game with the Fire, and instead announced that the Lynx were trailing by 2. This led to the bizarre spectacle of Lynx captain Richard Wanamaker pulling his goalie with 30 seconds left in the tie game, and the Chill choosing to kill the clock rather than shoot for the open cage. When the correct tally was confirmed after the game, Davison was immediately ousted from The Scorekeepers Union.

There would be no such concerns in the second contest, as the Hackers built an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 14-4 win. Donnie Bailey led the Hackers with 7 points in his first game of the season. The one-sided game was best illustrated by the shot totals, as the Hackers led 18-4 after one period, and outshot the Fire 54-26 for the game.

In Tuesday’s first game of the week, Mike Sullivan’s goal with just over one minute remaining gave the Lite-Sabres a 10-9 win over the Slayers. The game had been a tight one throughout, with several lead changes. Tony Joyce extended his League scoring lead with a 7-point effort in a losing cause. Dave MacKenzie led the Sabres with 4 goals. The Lite-Sabres and Hackers will meet Oct. 23 in a showdown of the League’s only two unbeaten clubs.
