Slayers Dodge Fourth Straight Loss

March 17, 2003
The Sunnydale Slayers entered their Monday game against the Keane Chill with the dubious distinction of being the only team without a win in the 2003A season. Never, in the history of the league has a team failed to win at least one game in the course of an entire season.

The first period began with both teams playing wide-open hockey, but surprisingly few goals were scored in the early going. Several early opportunities were thwarted by goalposts, yet five goals still managed to find the twine in the first period. Three of those goals were scored by the Chill, capped by Mike Hashem's seventh goal of the season. Hashem scored the goal while bleeding from the knuckle as a result of an errant Slayer stick.

The second period was easily the Slayers' best period of the entire season. The pesky team forechecked relentlessly, leading to five second period goals. Gian Scalet and Ian Scott scored two goals apiece in the period, while Dodge made remarkable save after remarkable save, as the Slayers opened up a 7-4 intermission lead.

The final period was a dead heat, as both teams managed three goals and fourteen shots each. When all was said and done, the Slayers had a 10-7 victory, and more importantly, won their first game of the season. With the loss, the Chill dropped to 2-2 and will drop out of a tie for first place on Thursday.

Scalet and Scott both tallied three goals and one assist for the victorious Slayers. Damian Ho also racked up four points for the Slayers, in the form of a goal and three assists. Chill forward Andrew Mercer moved into third place in the league's scoring race with his three goals and one assist.
