Tyrr-mendous! Tyrrell Leads Slayers to Historic Vi

November 10, 2002
Two streaks came to a halt in last Thursday's late game, as the Sunnydale Slayers pulled off a major upset when they beat the previously undefeated LAN Hackers 14-8. The Hackers had gone undefeated in their first 6 games this season prior to this loss.

For the Slayers, the win marked the first time in their eight-season history that they reached four wins in the regular season. The Slayers assumed sole possession of second place overall with the victory, as they improved their record to 4-3.

The Slayers were led by their leading scorer Rob Tyrrell, who repeatedly punished the Hackers in scoring 8 of the Slayers 14 goals. Slayers goalie Paul Chui made 43 saves and was named the game's third star. The unsung heroes for the Slayers in this game were their defensive core, who had the unenviable task of containing the Hackers daunting offence. Rene Aucoin, Phil Pellerin, and Jake Haddad did an admirable job of doing just that -- most notable holding Hacker forward John Price to a single goal.

Rookie Donnie Bailey led all Hacker scorers with 4 goals and 3 assists, while Jamie Houghton added 3 goals and 1 assist.

Thursday's early game between the Keane Chill and the Lite-Sabres was not as competitive as many of the fans on hand would have hoped. The Chill were playing without their top forward line of Jason Royal and Tony Joyce. Royal is nursing an unfortunate knee injury, after putting up career-high numbers in his first 4 games of the season.

The Sabres were the league's lowest scoring team entering the game, but they played nothing like the team that had only averaged 6 goals per game in their first five games of the year. The Sabres repeatedly broke down the Chill defence with intricate passing plays that often led to tap-in goals. Spiro Bokolas more than doubled his season output by tallying an amazing 7 goals and 3 assists, as the Sabres cruised to a 19-3 victory. David Watson and Damien Ho contributed to the Sabres' well-balanced attack with three goals apiece. Greg Foran scored all three of the Chill's goals.
